Review: It was a cake decorators dream come true when a box full of Duff Goldman products arrive at your door! Ace of Cakes is one of my favorite cake decorating shows and I have always been curious as to the taste of his products. I was given one of each of the products listed above and used them to make a retirement cake for one of the ladies at work.
My coworkers were instantly in love with this cake. I have been making cakes for them for years and they acted like this was the first one. Almost everyone was sneaking seconds and commenting on how amazing it tasted. The cake was moist yet firm so it stayed together quite nicely and had a great flavor that went perfectly with the cream cheese frosting. I have made homemade red velvet cake before but achieving the bright red coloring is very difficult so I loved the deep shade of red in this cake. I topped this particular cake with my homemade buttercream recipe. The purple color was created using the Food Color Paste which I prefer to my current brand because it comes in a squirtable tube. The small jars I use now require the use of toothpicks to pull out the coloring which is time consuming and messy.
I used the fondant on my mother's wedding rehearsal dinner cupcakes recently (see how to make the wedding dress cupcakes):
I have only ever used a homemade marshmallow fondant before this and to say it is challenging to work with is an understatement. Duff's fondant, however, is much more pliable and tastes amazing. It was very easy to color and also quite easy to roll out. It is not nearly as stiff as I am used to which would make it perfect for covering a cake, but I am not sure it would work well if you were trying to mold decorations. I attempted to make a bow for the dress belt but it would just not hold up. I could have mixed it with some gumpaste to make it stiffer, but decided to just stick with a belt for the cupcake dress. A made the cupcakes a day ahead of time and the fondant did not dry out at all. I am looking forward to using it on some more cakes!
My experience with the Duff Goldman products was very positive. I have always been nervous to try this brand but I will definitely purchase with confidence in the future!
