Diet-to-Go

Losing weight is not easy. If it was, there would not be an obesity epidemic in America. If you are not used to healthy eating, then getting started on a healthier lifestyle can be very overwhelming. Diet-to-Go is a food program that took the guessing, and even shopping, out of the picture. They offer a week's worth of meals in low-fat, vegetarian, or low-carb options and all of their meals are prepared fresh before freezing.  The meals contain everything you need including side items, condiments and sometimes even beverages - this is an all encompassing meal plan! Your meals arrive packaged in dry ice in a specially designed cooler to maintain their fresh taste. Although they have created five full weeks of menus, they recognize that not everyone likes everything. They give you the opportunity to substitute meals and make changes.

Here are the meals that were included for my 5-day sample:
Breakfast
Breakfast pizza, apple juice
Mushroom strata, chicken sausage, V8, yogurt
Raisin Bran Muffin, Strawberry preserves, orange juice
Corn bread muffin, orange marmalade, cream cheese, yogurt, orange juice
Asparagus and Swiss frittata, V8 Fusion, orange segments

Lunch
Turkey burger, multi-grain roll, ketchup, american cheese, mandarin oranges
Bistro chicken salad sesame breadsticks
Chicken Philly sub, money mustard mayo, american cheese, peach pudding
Chicken pesto sandwich, whole wheat roll
Grilled cheese, lentil chili, brownie

Dinner
Baked spaghetti pie, cauliflower, Parmesan cheese, sesame breadsticks
Barbecue chicken, anise roasted potatoes, baked beans, green beans
Turkey picadillo, brown rice pilaf, apricot glazed asparagus
Macaroni & cheese, carrot coins, broccoli florets, Parmesan cheese
Thai turkey tenderloin, stir fry rice, green bean medley

Diet-to-Go Review:  I have been trying to stay away from processed foods so the fact that  these meals are made fresh before being frozen was really appealing to me. When I received the assortment, I was very intrigued by the wide variety of meals.  I also, I will admit, had my reservations about some of the meals.  For example, I had a hard time believing that frozen egg meals could be any good reheated. I was, over and over again, surprised by the tasty meals....even the egg ones!

How the Diet-to-Go meals are packaged

My very first meal was a Chicken Philly Sub and it set the stage for the rest of the meals. It was not only very tasty, but it tasted so fresh!
Macaroni and Cheese
Macaroni and Cheese - food can be eaten from container!
Not only were the main foods delicious, the combination they came with really enhanced the meal. For example, the orange segments and V8 sides to the Asparagus and Swiss Fritatta made from a really nice and sweet complement to the eggs. Some of the meals were so delicious that it was hard to believe the word "diet" could even be associated with it! The Macaroni and Cheese was one of the BEST I have ever had. I had my kids try this one and they both started picking at my plate until they ate almost all of it!

I had luck with all of the meals tasting amazing except for the Grilled Cheese Sandwich. I had a little mishap with the container it came in. Although it was my impression that the containers were microwave-friendly, this one had more of a Styrofoam feel (as compared to the usual plastic) and ended up warping in the microwave. The grilled cheese also heated too quickly and the cheese ended up running out of the sandwich. After that experience, I kept a closer eye on the food while it was heating up and I had no other problems. The meals were all clearly labeled with directions on how to heat. One of my meals was a pasta and was mislabeled as chicken tenders, but as far as I could tell this was an exception to the well-labeled meals.

Baked Spaghetti Pie & Cauliflower
Aside from their delicious taste, I was also happy with how filling they were. I could eat a meal and be satiated until the next meal. I am so used to snacking in between meals that the satisfaction I received from one of these meals was shocking! In fact, some had more food than I could eat in one meal so I reheated some leftovers for a snack if I needed it in between meals. This was the case  for this Barbecue Chicken meal (pictured below).  The chicken tasted so moist and fresh - it was delicious. I enjoyed the green beans and the baked beans but the potatoes lacked flavor (though it was probably related to my dislike of this kind of potatoes rather than the Diet to Go meal itself).:

So, how did I do with weight loss? I did not eat a full-days worth of Diet-to-Go on a daily basis because it was just too hard with my kids needing dinners cooked but I still managed to lose two pounds in two weeks eating these meals intermittently  I would imagine that the weight loss would be even more profound if I stuck strictly to this plan.  Aside from the dinner issue, I would have no problem sticking with it....I have never been on a diet that tasted so good before in my life!
